<p>The legitimate advertising experts at Webrageous fear for the reputation of trustworthy specialists in the industry and have made it their responsibility to share essential warnings about the actions of unscrupulous advertising companies and how not to fall victim to these pay per click scam artists.</p>

<p>“Nobody should fall prey to online marketing fraud,” said Webrageous’ Director of Marketing, David Chapman. “Webrageous wants to ensure that advertisers are aware of the pay per click management scams that deceitful managers and unqualified companies like to run.”</p>

<p>The following list highlights some of the worst online marketing scams that mercenary search engine optimization companies (SEO) or pay per click (PPC) firms use in order to draw in new and unsuspecting clients:</p>

<p>1. Installing Link Directories on a Website (SEO)</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>A search engine optimization firm that wants to install a link directory program on a website probably plans to put that site into a link exchange program.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Reciprocal links are not effective in SEO. If someone is engaging in extensive two-way linking, they risk being banned or penalized by the top search engines.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Don’t let so-called online marketing experts do this with your website,” Mr. Chapman said. “Link exchanges no longer work.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>2. Upfront Charges for Free Google Services (SEO)</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Beware of companies that require upfront payment for services that Google actually offers for free. Webrageous can provide full information about Google services in order to prevent advertisers from being conned into signing up for something that shouldn’t cost a cent.</p>

<p>Google publishes which features are free. Webrageous advises that advertisers check with Google before signing into any contract, because some unscrupulous SEO firms even charge for setting up a listing on Google Maps. A listing on Google Maps has never cost the advertiser anything and setup can be done in less than five minutes.</p>

<p>3. Priority Submission to Google (SEO)</p>

<p>Some search engine optimization scams focus on the idea that priority submissions can be made for specific websites. Webrageous can confirm that this is not true. Google never creates special relationships with anyone.</p>

<p>The only way that anyone can submit a site to Google is to do so through Google’s Add URL Page Section or via the Google Sitemaps program.</p>

This natural, free listing, is often achieved within a matter of weeks. Nobody should have to pay for the privilege.</p>

<p>4. Permanent or Special Positions on Google (SEO/PPC)</p>

<p>Some search optimization companies like to falsely claim that Google has reserved special positions for their clients on the Google search engine results page, either for paid or natural results.</p>

<p>Webrageous knows that this is not true and it will never be true. Google never guarantees a website a position on the Google search engine results page for anyone.</p>

<p>5. Charging For Pay Per Click Management but Only Working on Natural Search (SEO/PPC)</p>

<p>This is perhaps one of the dirtiest tricks of them all. Some pay per click management companies charge their clients for pay per click advertising which isn’t actually being provided.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Webrageous has discovered that some pay per click management scam artists charge their clients $  2000 for paid search advertisements, but only use $  1000 or less of that budget for pay per click. They then keep the rest of the money for themselves.</p>

<p>In order to cover up what they have been doing, the missing $  1000 of advertising money is accounted for from organic search results. The scamming pay per click management company sends their client results gathered from paid search advertisements and organic ones all mixed together. Sometimes the scamming company takes things one step further and doesn’t produce any reports for their clients at all.</p>

<p>As the traffic starts to come in, the scamming pay per click management company claims that ALL the traffic is the result of the pay per click management that they have been doing, when in reality the traffic has come from organic listings that the client should not have to pay for.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Webrageous advises all businesses to thoroughly research the SEO and pay per click management companies they want to work with before signing a contract. Advertisers should start with what the Better Business Bureau has to say about particular agencies and then they can continue their research from there.</p>

<p>Google launched a major update to their search engine algorithm, titled the Penguin update on April 24th.  The Penguin update targets websites and businesses that Google has identified as over-optimized and penalizes them for trying to trick their search algorithm and increase rankings.  This update is predicted to impact 3% of all search queries.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“While 3% may not sound like a lot, the reality is that represents over 365,000 websites including those of small- to medium-sized businesses and even Fortune 100 companies,” states Wisnefski.  “WebiMax launched PenguinWatch as a full-scale resource center offering free website analysis, strategic recommendations, tips, news and updates.”</p>

<p>Google officially announced the Penguin update is one of over 500 annual updates to their search algorithm, however the problem is the amount of sites that were wrongfully flagged.  Last year when the company released their Panda Update, over 40% of websites were wrongfully penalized.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Google’s recent efforts to reshape its results listings have come under fire within the SEO and webmaster community,” states Todd Bailey, Vice President of Marketing and Digital Strategy for WebiMax.  “This effort has been viewed as a harsh update with underlying intent under the protection of the company’s standard mantra of clearing out web-spam and providing better results for the user.”</p>

<p>Last year when Google released the Panda update, major U.S. based retailer J.C. Penney was penalized for spam because their SEO firm was using black-hat optimization tactics to inflate their search rankings.  An official spokesperson from J.C. Penney revealed that they quickly fired their search marketing company and worked to remove the ill-advised paid links that were in violation of Google’s SEO guidelines.  After 90 days, the ban was lifted and J.C. Penney returned to normal rankings.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“The Penguin update is an industry game-changer,” discusses Chris Countey, Director of SEO Strategy at WebiMax.  “Link schemes, keyword stuffing and automated SEO tools have always been frowned upon by the SEO community, but now they are dangerous, too.  Companies who have not yet realized that real inbound marketing is the only sustainable way of improving traffic and conversions are likely to be impacted by Penguin. This could potentially destroy businesses that do not change how they market online and it’s apparent the effects are already being felt,” concludes Countey.</p>

<p>While the update is expected to impact 3% of search queries, Todd Bailey states webmasters already know who they are.</p>

<p> Google Penguin, the latest wildlife from the wilderness of search engine algorithms, was launched to dole out retribution to web spam and has produced some very curious and questionable results thus far. Internet marketing authority James Schramko has released an SEOPartner news video to help clients make heads or tails of the update.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Penguin has been causing carnage across the Internet,” the SEOPartner CEO reports. “A lot of people have been affected by it, so we’ve dug into our research and development lab and found some results. We’ve also had to look into sites of customers who’ve asked us to look at their results.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>One of the conclusions that Schramko and his team have arrived at is that Penguin seems to be targeting on-page anchor text spamming. “So if you have too many instances of a keyword, if it’s in your page title, your first headline, sprinkled throughout the article, and then you link to that page with the same keyphrase over and over again, you’ve probably been hit by Penguin,” he avers. According to him, it is necessary now more than ever for website owners to “de-tune” their keywords.</p>

<p>Schramko provides a breakdown of what he thinks the new SEO mix looks like. “I think it’s about 20% social media, so be sure to install social sharing widgets on your website,” he instructs.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“It’s about 50% backlinks,” Schramko continues, elaborating, “They still work, but you really need to mix them around. If you just use the same anchor text, you will be penalized.” The remaining 30%, he allocates to on-page SEO. “So what that means is, the content on your website has to be natural. It has to be human-readable.” He urges website owners to check that the page title of their site reads like a natural sentence, without any pipe symbols or colons.</p>

<p>Schramko also recommends removing some of the intelligent plug-ins, like WPsyndicator and SEO smartlinks, which could potentially damage a website. “If you really don’t know what you’re doing, you really shouldn’t have those plug-ins.” He does profess a preference for YARPP, which is another related post plug-in. Generally speaking, however, he thinks that the in-text hyperlinking of keywords between pages is not so effective anymore, and probably risky to boot.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Schramko also stresses the importance of removing links from dead blog networks and regularly updating with fresh content to avoid being Penguin-slapped as well. There has been a lot of controversy over the results garnered by the latest algorithm update and Google has provided a Penguin feedback form for those who would like to report well-ranking spam or to reverse the blow Penguin dealt them. “Make sure that your site is good if you’re going to do that,” Schramko advises.</p>

<p>“I think that in a week or two from now, we’ll see some changes in the search results as they make adjustments and try to learn from their mistakes.”  Schramko observes.  </p>

<p>At the end of the day, all the algorithm updates will eventually get Google what it wants: people being less aggressive with keyword in anchor text links and sites having real content that is updated often and shared socially.</p>
